Sun Dance

Not tourists. Not locals. Not welcome. Not noticed...

Until they start their defiant dance, in one of Italy's most popular squares, Piazza Navona in Rome. Then they are somebody.

Youth from Romania, Kosovo, Peru, and other countries, now living in another land, brought together by the love of dance.

During a recent trip to Rome, Ahmed visited the Città dell'Altra Economia (City of the Other Economy) — a former abbatoir that used to provide meat to Rome. Now all but forgotten, it is in tatters. But it has been given new life by activists, musicians and the organic food movement.

It is here that he witnessed a fantastic event.  Hearing distant drums, he walked over to the area where members of the Senegalese community had gathered, as they regularly do. As the dusk approached on this warm June evening... a new baby!  A young mother appeared with a newborn baby, and the drummers broke into unbridled and joyous celebration, Senegalese style, pounding out Sabar rhythms on the drums. They danced, sang, and held a moment of prayer to welcome this new life and hope into a community that doesn't always see a bright future in a foreign land.
